Leviticus 19:1-2,17-18 1 Corinthians 3:16-23 Matthew 5:38-48 Our first reading prescribes how to grow in holiness and in our relationship with God and others. In the second reading, we are told that we are temples of the Holy Spirit. In the Gospel, Jesus takes the teaching to love our neighbor as ourselves, which is found in our first reading, and expands it to include loving our enemies.
Jesus teaches us by word and example to love our neighbor. We can rightly ask, who is my neighbor? Does Jesus mean only those who are related to me? Does it include the person next door? How about the stranger, the immigrant, the foreigner or the refugee? Does he also mean my enemy? Scripture teaches that it is all of these.
