Weekend of January 1-2, 2011-The Epiphany of the Lord

Isaiah 60:1-6                                   Ephesians 3:2-6                                           Matthew 2:1-12 In the first reading, Isaiah speaks of God’s light shining on Jerusalem, banishing the darkness.  In the second reading, Paul teaches that the Gentiles are co-heirs to the promise of salvation, offered through Christ.  In the gospel, Magi from the East are led by a star to the Child Jesus.  They paid him homage with rich gifts.

The Epiphany is a solemnity of joy, for it commemorates Jesus being revealed as the Light for all, Jew and Gentile alike.  Jesus is the promised One who would bring God’s plan of salvation to fulfillment and reopen the gates of heaven.  Let s offer the gift of our lives, like the gifts of the Magi, in humility and awe.
