Isaiah 7:10-14 Romans 1:1-7 Matthew 1:18-24
Today’s first reading includes the prophecy that a virgin will conceive and bear a Son, who will be called Emmanuel. In the second reading, Paul reminds us of the call to holiness, given new meaning through Christ. In the Gospel, we are told how the birth of Jesus came about, and how Joseph trusted God’s angel.
Most people do not see the call to holiness as their first priority in life. If anything, the tendency of many is to run in the opposite direction. For those who love and trust God, however, living holy lives, while providing great challenges, can also bring some of life’s greatest rewards. Jesus can show the way to these rewards.
