Sirach 35:12-14,16-18 2 Timothy 35:6-8,16-18 Luke 18:9-14 The first reading assures us that God hears the prayer of the lowly. In the second reading, we hear that Paul looked forward to the crown of righteousness promised to all the faithful. In the Gospel, Jesus tells the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector. Only the tax collector’s prayer was acceptable, since he approached the Father with humility.
Pride can keep us from praying as we should. If we focus our prayer on what we are doing right, instead of where we need to improve, we may forget how much we depend on God and his grace, even to accomplish the good that we do. Humility is the antidote for this. A heart that is humble knows how much it needs God.
