Isaiah 40:1-5,9-11 Acts 10:34-38 Luke 3:15-16,21-22 Isaiah promises the Israelites that God will act to bring them salvation. The fulfillment of this prophecy will be marked by a voice crying out in the desert. In the second reading, Peter recalls Jesus’ baptism, when he was anointed by the Holy Spirit. In the Gospel, John baptizes Jesus and
a voice from heaven proclaims that this is God’s beloved Son.
The celebration of the Baptism of the Lord marks the end of the Christmas season and also marks the beginning of the public ministry of Jesus. Today we might recall our own baptism and reflect on it as the beginning of our lives as disciples of Jesus. Let us renew our baptismal commitment to follow Jesus.
