Weekend of August 29-30, 2009 Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Deuteronomy 4:1-2,6-8                   James 1:17,18,21b-22,27                   Mark 7:1-8,14-15,21-23

Moses tells the people to observe only what the Lord commands - no more, no less.  In the second reading, James admonishes his listeners to be doers of the word, not hearers only.  Jesus, in the Gospel, expounds on disregard for God’s commands in favor of human traditions.  He says that evil comes from within the hearts of people, not from outside.

The natural law, which God has placed in every person’s heart, provides the rules for making moral choices.  Its main precepts are expressed in the Ten Commandments.  The teachings of Jesus help us understand it all the more.  With these things to help us, let us live the truth, so that the gates of paradise may be opened to us.
