Weekend of August 22-23, 2009-Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time

Joshua 24:1-2a,15-17,18b               Ephesians 5:21-32            John 6:60-69

The first reading describes how Joshua challenged the tribes of Israel to make a clear choice of whether or not they were going to serve God.  The readings from Ephesians makes it clear that husbands and wives are to live together in a oneness of love.  In the Gospel, many disciples re-
turned to their former way of life, but the Twelve remained with Jesus.

Our Catholic faith teaches us that we are blessed with the gift of free will and that this cannot be taken from us.  The question is, how will we use this gift?  We can use it to choose to serve our own selfish needs and desires or to choose to serve the Lord.  By choosing to serve God we can come to taste and experience his goodness and love.
